 ¹Depois de muitos dias veio a Elias a palavra do Senhor, no terceiro ano, dizendo: Vai, apresenta-te a Acabe; e eu mandarei chuva sobre a terra.    ²Então Elias foi apresentar-se a Acabe. E a fome era extrema em Samária.
    ³Acabe chamou a Obadias, o mordomo (ora, Obadias temia muito ao Senhor;
    ⁴pois sucedeu que, destruindo Jezabel os profetas do Senhor, Obadias tomou cem profetas e os escondeu, cinqüenta numa cova e cinqüenta noutra, e os sustentou com pão e água);
    ⁵e disse Acabe a Obadias: Vai pela terra a todas as fontes de água, e a todos os rios. Pode ser ser que achemos erva para salvar a vida dos cavalos e mulas, de maneira que não percamos todos os os animais.
    ⁶E repartiram entre si a terra, para a percorrerem; e foram a sós, Acabe por um caminho, e Obadias por outro.
    ⁷Quando, pois, Obadias já estava em caminho, eis que Elias se encontrou com ele; e Obadias, reconhecendo-o, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e disse: És tu, meu senhor Elias?
    ⁸Respondeu-lhe ele: Sou eu. Vai, dize a teu senhor: Eis que Elias está aqui.
    ⁹Ele, porém, disse: Em que pequei, para que entregues teu servo na mão de Acabe, para ele me matar?
    ¹⁰Vive o Senhor teu Deus, que não há nação nem reino aonde o meu senhor não tenha mandado em busca de ti; e dizendo eles: Aqui não está; então fazia-os jurar que não te haviam achado.
    ¹¹Agora tu dizes: Vai, dize a teu senhor: Eis que Elias está aqui.
    ¹²E será que, apartando-me eu de ti, o Espírito do Senhor te levará não sei para onde; e, vindo eu dar as novas a Acabe, e não te achando ele, matar-me-á. Todavia eu, teu servo, temo ao Senhor desde a minha mocidade.
    ¹³Porventura não disseram a meu senhor o que fiz, quando Jezabel matava os profetas do Senhor, como escondi cem dos profetas do Senhor, cinqüenta numa cova e cinqüenta noutra, e os sustentei com pão e água:
    ¹⁴E agora tu dizes: Vai, dize a teu senhor: Eis que Elias está aqui! Ele me matará.
    ¹⁵E disse Elias: Vive o Senhor dos exércitos, em cuja presença estou, que dereras hoje hei de apresentar-me a ele.
    ¹⁶Então foi Obadias encontrar-se com Acabe, e lho anunciou; e Acabe foi encontrar-se com Elias.
    ¹⁷E sucedeu que, vendo Acabe a Elias, disse-lhe: És tu, perturbador de Israel?
    ¹⁸Respondeu Elias: Não sou eu que tenho perturbado a Israel, mas és tu e a casa de teu pai, por terdes deixado os mandamentos do Senhor, e por teres tu seguido os baalins.
    ¹⁹Agora pois manda reunir-se a mim todo o Israel no monte Carmelo, como também os quatrocentos e cinquenta profetas de Baal, e os quatrocentos profetas de Asera, que comem da mesa de Jezabel.
    ²⁰Então Acabe convocou todos os filhos de Israel, e reuniu os profetas no monte Carmelo.
    ²¹E Elias se chegou a todo o povo, e disse: Até quando coxeareis entre dois pensamentos? Se o Senhor é Deus, segui-o; mas se Baal, segui-o. O povo, porém, não lhe respondeu nada.
    ²²Então disse Elias ao povo: Só eu fiquei dos profetas do Senhor; mas os profetas de Baal são quatrocentos e cinqüenta homens.
    ²³Dêem-se-nos, pois, dois novilhos; e eles escolham para si um dos novilhos, e o dividam em pedaços, e o ponham sobre a lenha, porém não lhe metam fogo; e eu prepararei o outro novilho, e o porei sobre a lenha, e não lhe meterei fogo.
    ²⁴Então invocai o nome do vosso deus, e eu invocarei o nome do Senhor; e há de ser que o deus que responder por meio de fogo, esse será Deus. E todo o povo respondeu, dizendo: É boa esta palavra.
    ²⁵Disse, pois, Elias aos profetas de Baal: Escolhei para vós: um dos novilhos, e preparai-o primeiro, porque sois muitos, e invocai o nome do Senhor, vosso deus, mas não metais fogo ao sacrifício.
    ²⁶E, tomando o novilho que se lhes dera, prepararam-no, e invocaram o nome de Baal, desde a manhã até o meio-dia, dizendo: Ah Baal, responde-nos! Porém não houve voz; ninguém respondeu. E saltavam em volta do altar que tinham feito.
    ²⁷Sucedeu que, ao meio-dia, Elias zombava deles, dizendo: Clamai em altas vozes, porque ele é um deus; pode ser que esteja falando, ou que tenha alguma coisa que fazer, ou que intente alguma viagem; talvez esteja dormindo, e necessite de que o acordem.
    ²⁸E eles clamavam em altas vozes e, conforme o seu costume, se retalhavam com facas e com lancetas, até correr o sangue sobre eles.
    ²⁹Também sucedeu que, passado o meio dia, profetizaram eles até a hora de se oferecer o sacrifício da tarde. Porém não houve voz; ninguém respondeu, nem atendeu.
    ³⁰Então Elias disse a todo o povo: chegai-vos a mim. E todo o povo se chegou a ele. E Elias reparou o altar do Senhor, que havia sido derrubado.
    ³¹Tomou doze pedras, conforme o número das tribos dos filhos de Jacó, ao qual viera a palavra do Senhor, dizendo: Israel será o teu nome;
    ³²e com as pedras edificou o altar em nome do Senhor; depois fez em redor do altar um rego, em que podiam caber duas medidas de semente.
    ³³Então armou a lenha, e dividiu o novilho em pedaços, e o pôs sobre a lenha, e disse: Enchei de água quatro cântaros, e derramai-a sobre o holocausto e sobre a lenha.
    ³⁴Disse ainda: fazei-o segunda vez; e o fizeram segunda vez. De novo disse: Fazei-o terceira vez; e o fizeram terceira vez.
    ³⁵De maneira que a água corria ao redor do altar; e ele encheu de água também o rego.
    ³⁶Sucedeu pois que, sendo já hora de se oferecer o sacrifício da tarde, o profeta Elias se chegou, e disse: ç Senhor, Deus de Abraão, de Isaque, e de Israel, seja manifestado hoje que tu és Deus em Israel, e que eu sou teu servo, e que conforme a tua palavra tenho feito todas estas coisas.
    ³⁷Responde-me, ó Senhor, responde-me para que este povo conheça que tu, ó Senhor, és Deus, e que tu fizeste voltar o seu coração.
    ³⁸Então caiu fogo do Senhor, e consumiu o holocausto, a lenha, as pedras, e o pó, e ainda lambeu a água que estava no rego.
    ³⁹Quando o povo viu isto, prostraram-se todos com o rosto em terra e disseram: O senhor é Deus! O Senhor é Deus!
    ⁴⁰Disse-lhes Elias: Agarrai os profetas de Baal! que nenhum deles escape: Agarraram-nos; e Elias os fez descer ao ribeiro de Quisom, onde os matou.
    ⁴¹Então disse Elias a Acabe: Sobe, come e bebe, porque há ruído de abundante chuva.
    ⁴²Acabe, pois, subiu para comer e beber; mas Elias subiu ao cume do Carmelo e, inclinando-se por terra, meteu o rosto entre os joelhos.
    ⁴³E disse ao seu moço: Sobe agora, e olha para a banda do mar. E ele subiu, olhou, e disse: Não há nada. Então disse Elias: Volta lá sete vezes.
    ⁴⁴Sucedeu que, ã sétima vez, disse: Eis que se levanta do mar uma nuvem, do tamanho da mão dum homem: Então disse Elias: Sobe, e dize a Acabe: Aparelha o teu carro, e desce, para que a chuva não te impeça.
    ⁴⁵E sucedeu que em pouco tempo o céu se enegreceu de nuvens e vento, e caiu uma grande chuva. Acabe, subindo ao carro, foi para Jizreel:
    ⁴⁶E a mão do Senhor estava sobre Elias, o qual cingiu os lombos, e veio correndo perante Acabe, até a entrada de Jizreel.

Elijah and Obadiah

 ¹ After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.” ² So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.   Now the famine was severe in Samaria, ³ and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the LORD. ⁴ While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)⁵ Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.” ⁶ So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
 ⁷ As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
 ⁸ “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
 ⁹ “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? ¹⁰ As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. ¹¹ But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ ¹² I don’t know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the LORD since my youth. ¹³ Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred of the LORD’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. ¹⁴ And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
 ¹⁵ Elijah said, “As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”

Elijah on Mount Carmel

 ¹⁶ So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. ¹⁷ When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?” ¹⁸ “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the LORD’s commands and have followed the Baals. ¹⁹ Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
 ²⁰ So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. ²¹ Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
   But the people said nothing.
 ²² Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. ²³ Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. ²⁴ Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”
   Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
 ²⁵ Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” ²⁶ So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
   Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
 ²⁷ At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” ²⁸ So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. ²⁹Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.
 ³⁰ Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which had been torn down. ³¹ Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” ³² With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs^[a] of seed. ³³ He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
 ³⁴ “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
   “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. ³⁵ The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
 ³⁶ At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. ³⁷ Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
 ³⁸ Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
 ³⁹ When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”
 ⁴⁰ Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.
 ⁴¹ And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” ⁴² So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.
 ⁴³ “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
   “There is nothing there,” he said.
   Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
 ⁴⁴ The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
   So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
 ⁴⁵ Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. ⁴⁶ The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

Elías y Abdías

 ¹ Después de un largo tiempo, en el tercer año, la palabra del Señor vino a Elías y le dio este mensaje: «Ve y preséntate ante Acab, que voy a enviar lluvia sobre la tierra.»² Así que Elías se puso en camino para presentarse ante Acab.   En Samaria había mucha hambre.³ Por lo tanto, Acab mandó llamar a Abdías, quien administraba su palacio y veneraba al Señor.⁴ Como Jezabel estaba acabando con los profetas del Señor, Abdías había tomado a cien de ellos y los había escondido en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y les había dado de comer y de beber.⁵ Acab instruyó a Abdías: «Recorre todo el país en busca de fuentes y ríos. Tal vez encontremos pasto para mantener vivos los caballos y las mulas, y no perdamos nuestras bestias.»⁶ Así que se dividieron la tierra que iban a recorrer: Acab se fue en una dirección, y Abdías en la otra.
⁷ Abdías iba por su camino cuando Elías le salió al encuentro. Al reconocerlo, Abdías se postró rostro en tierra y le preguntó:
   —Mi señor Elías, ¿de veras es usted?
⁸ —Sí, soy yo —le respondió—. Ve a decirle a tu amo que aquí estoy.
⁹ —¿Qué mal ha hecho este servidor suyo —preguntó Abdías—, para que usted me entregue a Acab y él me mate?¹⁰ Tan cierto como que vive el Señor su Dios, que no hay nación ni reino adonde mi amo no haya mandado a buscarlo. Y a quienes afirmaban que usted no estaba allí, él los hacía jurar que no lo habían encontrado.¹¹ ¿Y ahora usted me ordena que vaya a mi amo y le diga que usted está aquí?¹² ¡Qué sé yo a dónde lo va a llevar el Espíritu del Señor cuando nos separemos! Si voy y le digo a Acab que usted está aquí, y luego él no lo encuentra, ¡me matará! Tenga usted en cuenta que yo, su servidor, he sido fiel al Señor desde mi juventud.¹³¿No le han contado a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel estaba matando a los profetas del Señor? ¡Pues escondí a cien de los profetas del Señor en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y les di de comer y de beber!¹⁴ ¡Y ahora usted me ordena que vaya a mi amo y le diga que usted está aquí! ¡De seguro me matará!
¹⁵ Elías le respondió:
   —Tan cierto como que vive el Señor *Todopoderoso, a quien sirvo, te aseguro que hoy me presentaré ante Acab. 

Elías en el monte Carmelo

 ¹⁶ Abdías fue a buscar a Acab y le informó de lo sucedido, así que éste fue al encuentro de Elías¹⁷ y, cuando lo vio, le preguntó:   —¿Eres tú el que le está causando problemas a Israel?
¹⁸ —No soy yo quien le está causando problemas a Israel —respondió Elías—. Quienes se los causan son tú y tu familia, porque han abandonado los mandamientos del Señor y se han ido tras los *baales.¹⁹ Ahora convoca de todas partes al pueblo de Israel, para que se reúna conmigo en el monte Carmelo con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de la diosa *Aserá que se sientan a la mesa de Jezabel.
²⁰ Acab convocó en el monte Carmelo a todos los israelitas y a los profetas.²¹Elías se presentó ante el pueblo y dijo:
   —¿Hasta cuándo van a seguir indecisos?^[a] Si el Dios verdadero es el Señor, deben seguirlo; pero si es Baal, síganlo a él.
   El pueblo no dijo una sola palabra.²² Entonces Elías añadió:
   —Yo soy el único que ha quedado de los profetas del Señor; en cambio, Baal cuenta con cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas.²³ Tráigannos dos bueyes. Que escojan ellos uno, y lo descuarticen y pongan los pedazos sobre la leña, pero sin prenderle fuego. Yo prepararé el otro buey y lo pondré sobre la leña, pero tampoco le prenderé fuego.²⁴ Entonces invocarán ellos el *nombre de su dios, y yo invocaré el nombre del Señor. ¡El que responda con fuego, ése es el Dios verdadero!
   Y todo el pueblo estuvo de acuerdo.
²⁵ Entonces Elías les dijo a los profetas de Baal:
   —Ya que ustedes son tantos, escojan uno de los bueyes y prepárenlo primero. Invoquen luego el nombre de su dios, pero no prendan fuego.
²⁶ Los profetas de Baal tomaron el buey que les dieron y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de su dios desde la mañana hasta el mediodía.
   —¡Baal, respóndenos! —gritaban, mientras daban brincos alrededor del altar que habían hecho.
   Pero no se escuchó nada, pues nadie respondió.²⁷ Al mediodía Elías comenzó a burlarse de ellos:
   —¡Griten más fuerte! —les decía—. Seguro que es un dios, pero tal vez esté meditando, o esté ocupado o de viaje. ¡A lo mejor se ha quedado dormido y hay que despertarlo!
²⁸ Comenzaron entonces a gritar más fuerte y, como era su costumbre, se cortaron con cuchillos y dagas hasta quedar bañados en sangre.²⁹ Pasó el mediodía, y siguieron con su espantosa algarabía hasta la hora del sacrificio vespertino. Pero no se escuchó nada, pues nadie respondió ni prestó atención.
³⁰ Entonces Elías le dijo a todo el pueblo:
   —¡Acérquense!
   Así lo hicieron. Como el altar del Señor estaba en ruinas, Elías lo reparó.³¹Luego recogió doce piedras, una por cada tribu descendiente de Jacob, a quien el Señor le había puesto por nombre Israel.³² Con las piedras construyó un altar en honor del Señor, y alrededor cavó una zanja en que cabían quince litros^[b] de cereal.³³ Colocó la leña, descuartizó el buey, puso los pedazos sobre la leña³⁴ y dijo:
   —Llenen de agua cuatro cántaros, y vacíenlos sobre el *holocausto y la leña.
   Luego dijo:
   —Vuelvan a hacerlo.
   Y así lo hicieron.
   —¡Háganlo una vez más! —les ordenó.
   Y por tercera vez vaciaron los cántaros.³⁵ El agua corría alrededor del altar hasta llenar la zanja.
³⁶ A la hora del sacrificio vespertino, el profeta Elías dio un paso adelante y oró así: «Señor, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, que todos sepan hoy que tú eres Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo y he hecho todo esto en obediencia a tu palabra.³⁷ ¡Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme, para que esta gente reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que estás convirtiendo a ti su *corazón!»
³⁸ En ese momento cayó el fuego del Señor y quemó el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el suelo, y hasta lamió el agua de la zanja.³⁹ Cuando todo el pueblo vio esto, se postró y exclamó: «¡El Señor es Dios, el Dios verdadero!»
⁴⁰ Luego Elías les ordenó:
   —¡Agarren a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!
   Tan pronto como los agarraron, Elías hizo que los bajaran al arroyo Quisón, y allí los ejecutó.⁴¹ Entonces Elías le dijo a Acab:
   —Anda a tu casa, y come y bebe, porque ya se oye el ruido de un torrentoso aguacero.
⁴² Acab se fue a comer y beber, pero Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo, se inclinó hasta el suelo y puso el rostro entre las rodillas.
⁴³ —Ve y mira hacia el mar —le ordenó a su criado.
   El criado fue y miró, y dijo:
   —No se ve nada.
   Siete veces le ordenó Elías que fuera a ver,⁴⁴ y la séptima vez el criado le informó:
   —Desde el mar viene subiendo una nube. Es tan pequeña como una mano.
   Entonces Elías le ordenó:
   —Ve y dile a Acab: "Engancha el carro y vete antes de que la lluvia te detenga."
⁴⁵ Las nubes fueron oscureciendo el cielo; luego se levantó el viento y se desató una fuerte lluvia. Pero Acab se fue en su carro hacia Jezrel.⁴⁶ Entonces el poder del Señor vino sobre Elías, quien ajustándose el manto con el cinturón, echó a correr y llegó a Jezrel antes que Acab.

 ¹Bien des jours s'écoulèrent, et la parole de l'Éternel fut ainsi adressée à Élie, dans la troisième année: Va, présente-toi devant Achab, et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.    ²Et Élie alla, pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était grande à Samarie.
    ³Et Achab fit appeler Abdias, chef de sa maison. -Or Abdias craignait beaucoup l'Éternel;
    ⁴et lorsque Jézabel extermina les prophètes de l'Éternel, Abdias prit cent prophètes qu'il cacha cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne, et il les avait nourris de pain et d'eau. -
    ⁵Achab dit à Abdias: Va par le pays vers toutes les sources d'eau et vers tous les torrents; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l'herbe, et nous conserverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous n'aurons pas besoin d'abattre du bétail.
    ⁶Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un autre chemin.
    ⁷Comme Abdias était en route, voici, Élie le rencontra. Abdias, l'ayant reconnu, tomba sur son visage, et dit: Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Élie?
    ⁸Il lui répondit: C'est moi; va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie!
    ⁹Et Abdias dit: Quel péché ai-je commis, pour que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d'Achab, qui me fera mourir?
    ¹⁰L'Éternel est vivant! il n'est ni nation ni royaume où mon maître n'ait envoyé pour te chercher; et quand on disait que tu n'y étais pas, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation que l'on ne t'avait pas trouvé.
    ¹¹Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie!
    ¹²Puis, lorsque je t'aurai quitté l'esprit de l'Éternel te transportera je ne sais où; et j'irai informer Achab, qui ne te trouvera pas, et qui me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint l'Éternel dès sa jeunesse.
    ¹³N'a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j'ai fait quand Jézabel tua les prophètes de l'Éternel? J'ai caché cent prophètes de l'Éternel, cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne, et je les ai nourris de pain et d'eau.
    ¹⁴Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie! Il me tuera.
    ¹⁵Mais Élie dit: L'Éternel des armées, dont je suis le serviteur, est vivant! aujourd'hui je me présenterai devant Achab.
    ¹⁶Abdias, étant allé à la rencontre d'Achab, l'informa de la chose. Et Achab se rendit au-devant d'Élie.
    ¹⁷A peine Achab aperçut-il Élie qu'il lui dit: Est-ce toi, qui jettes le trouble en Israël?
    ¹⁸Élie répondit: Je ne trouble point Israël; c'est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, puisque vous avez abandonné les commandements de l'Éternel et que tu es allé après les Baals.
    ¹⁹Fais maintenant rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi, à la montagne du Carmel, et aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d'Astarté qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.
    ²⁰Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les enfants d'Israël, et il rassembla les prophètes à la montagne du Carmel.
    ²¹Alors Élie s'approcha de tout le peuple, et dit: Jusqu'à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si l'Éternel est Dieu, allez après lui; si c'est Baal, allez après lui! Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
    ²²Et Élie dit au peuple: Je suis resté seul des prophètes de l'Éternel, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.
    ²³Que l'on nous donne deux taureaux; qu'ils choisissent pour eux l'un des taureaux, qu'ils le coupent par morceaux, et qu'ils le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu; et moi, je préparerai l'autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
    ²⁴Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu; et moi, j'invoquerai le nom de l'Éternel. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, c'est celui-là qui sera Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit, en disant: C'est bien!
    ²⁵Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal: Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux, préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu; mais ne mettez pas le feu.
    ²⁶Ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur donna, et le préparèrent; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal, depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, en disant: Baal réponds nous! Mais il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l'autel qu'ils avaient fait.
    ²⁷A midi, Élie se moqua d'eux, et dit: Criez à haute voix, puisqu'il est dieu; il pense à quelque chose, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu'il dort, et il se réveillera.
    ²⁸Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu'à ce que le sang coulât sur eux.
    ²⁹Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu'au moment de la présentation de l'offrande. Mais il n'y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d'attention.
    ³⁰Élie dit alors à tout le peuple: Approchez-vous de moi! Tout le peuple s'approcha de lui. Et Élie rétablit l'autel de l'Éternel, qui avait été renversé.
    ³¹Il prit douze pierres d'après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel l'Éternel avait dit: Israël sera ton nom;
    ³²et il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de l'Éternel. Il fit autour de l'autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence.
    ³³Il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau par morceaux, et le plaça sur le bois.
    ³⁴Puis il dit: Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. Il dit: Faites-le une seconde fois. Et ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit: Faites-le une troisième fois. Et ils le firent une troisième fois.
    ³⁵L'eau coula autour de l'autel, et l'on remplit aussi d'eau le fossé.
    ³⁶Au moment de la présentation de l'offrande, Élie, le prophète, s'avança et dit: Éternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël! que l'on sache aujourd'hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur, et que j'ai fait toutes ces choses par ta parole!
    ³⁷Réponds-moi, Éternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que c'est toi, Éternel, qui es Dieu, et que c'est toi qui ramènes leur coeur!
    ³⁸Et le feu de l'Éternel tomba, et il consuma l'holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il absorba l'eau qui était dans le fossé.
    ³⁹Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent sur leur visage et dirent: C'est l'Éternel qui est Dieu! C'est l'Éternel qui est Dieu!
    ⁴⁰Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, leur dit Élie; qu'aucun d'eux n'échappe! Et ils les saisirent. Élie les fit descendre au torrent de Kison, où il les égorgea.
    ⁴¹Et Élie dit à Achab: Monte, mange et bois; car il se fait un bruit qui annonce la pluie.
    ⁴²Achab monta pour manger et pour boire. Mais Élie monta au sommet du Carmel; et, se penchant contre terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux,
    ⁴³et dit à son serviteur: Monte, regarde du côté de la mer. Le serviteur monta, il regarda, et dit: Il n'y a rien. Élie dit sept fois: Retourne.
    ⁴⁴A la septième fois, il dit: Voici un petit nuage qui s'élève de la mer, et qui est comme la paume de la main d'un homme. Élie dit: Monte, et dis à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne t'arrête pas.
    ⁴⁵En peu d'instants, le ciel s'obscurcit par les nuages, le vent s'établit, et il y eut une forte pluie. Achab monta sur son char, et partit pour Jizreel.
    ⁴⁶Et la main de l'Éternel fut sur Élie, qui se ceignit les reins et courut devant Achab jusqu'à l'entrée de Jizreel.

 ¹ וַיְהִי֙ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים וּדְבַר־יְהוָ֗ה הָיָה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖ית לֵאמֹ֑ר לֵ֚ךְ הֵרָאֵ֣ה אֶל־אַחְאָ֔ב וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה מָטָ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃
 ² וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ לְהֵרָאֹ֖ות אֶל־אַחְאָ֑ב וְהָרָעָ֖ב חָזָ֥ק בְּשֹׁמְרֹֽון׃

 ²⁵ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ לִנְבִיאֵ֣י הַבַּ֗עַל בַּחֲר֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם הַפָּ֤ר הָֽאֶחָד֙ וַעֲשׂ֣וּ רִאשֹׁנָ֔ה כִּ֥י אַתֶּ֖ם הָרַבִּ֑ים וְקִרְאוּ֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם וְאֵ֖שׁ לֹ֥א תָשִֽׂימוּ׃
 ²⁶ וַ֠יִּקְחוּ אֶת־הַפָּ֨ר אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣ן לָהֶם֮ וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֒ וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ בְשֵׁם־הַ֠בַּעַל מֵהַבֹּ֨קֶר וְעַד־הַצָּהֳרַ֤יִם לֵאמֹר֙ הַבַּ֣עַל עֲנֵ֔נוּ וְאֵ֥ין קֹ֖ול וְאֵ֣ין עֹנֶ֑ה וַֽיְפַסְּח֔וּ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃
 ²⁷ וַיְהִ֨י בַֽצָּהֳרַ֜יִם וַיְהַתֵּ֧ל בָּהֶ֣ם אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ קִרְא֤וּ בְקֹול־גָּדֹול֙ כִּֽי־אֱלֹהִ֣ים ה֔וּא כִּ֣י שִׂ֧יחַ וְכִֽי־שִׂ֛יג לֹ֖ו וְכִֽי־דֶ֣רֶךְ לֹ֑ו אוּלַ֛י יָשֵׁ֥ן ה֖וּא וְיִקָֽץ׃
 ²⁸ וַֽיִּקְרְאוּ֙ בְּקֹ֣ול גָּדֹ֔ול וַיִּתְגֹּֽדְדוּ֙ כְּמִשְׁפָּטָ֔ם בַּחֲרָבֹ֖ות וּבָֽרְמָחִ֑ים עַד־שְׁפָךְ־דָּ֖ם עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃
 ²⁹ וַֽיְהִי֙ כַּעֲבֹ֣ר הַֽצָּהֳרַ֔יִם וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֔וּ עַ֖ד לַעֲלֹ֣ות הַמִּנְחָ֑ה וְאֵֽין־קֹ֥ול וְאֵין־עֹנֶ֖ה וְאֵ֥ין קָֽשֶׁב׃
 ³⁰ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֤הוּ לְכָל־הָעָם֙ גְּשׁ֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וַיִּגְּשׁ֥וּ כָל־הָעָ֖ם אֵלָ֑יו וַיְרַפֵּ֛א אֶת־מִזְבַּ֥ח יְהוָ֖ה הֶהָרֽוּס׃
 ³¹ וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ שְׁתֵּ֤ים עֶשְׂרֵה֙ אֲבָנִ֔ים כְּמִסְפַּ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֑ב אֲשֶׁר֩ הָיָ֨ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִהְיֶ֥ה שְׁמֶֽךָ׃
 ³² וַיִּבְנֶ֧ה אֶת־הָאֲבָנִ֛ים מִזְבֵּ֖חַ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּ֣עַשׂ תְּעָלָ֗ה כְּבֵית֙ סָאתַ֣יִם זֶ֔רַע סָבִ֖יב לַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃
 ³³ וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ אֶת־הָֽעֵצִ֑ים וַיְנַתַּח֙ אֶת־הַפָּ֔ר וַיָּ֖שֶׂם עַל־הָעֵצִֽים׃
 ³⁴ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מִלְא֨וּ אַרְבָּעָ֤ה כַדִּים֙ מַ֔יִם וְיִֽצְק֥וּ עַל־הָעֹלָ֖ה וְעַל־הָעֵצִ֑ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁנוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁנ֔וּ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר שַׁלֵּ֖שׁוּ וַיְשַׁלֵּֽשׁוּ׃

 ³⁸ וַתִּפֹּ֣ל אֵשׁ־יְהוָ֗ה וַתֹּ֤אכַל אֶת־הָֽעֹלָה֙ וְאֶת־הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאֶת־הָאֲבָנִ֖ים וְאֶת־הֶעָפָ֑ר וְאֶת־הַמַּ֥יִם אֲשֶׁר־בַּתְּעָלָ֖ה לִחֵֽכָה׃
 ³⁹ וַיַּרְא֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים יְהוָ֖ה ה֥וּא הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃
 ⁴⁰ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ לָהֶ֜ם תִּפְשׂ֣וּ ׀ אֶת־נְבִיאֵ֣י הַבַּ֗עַל אִ֛ישׁ אַל־יִמָּלֵ֥ט מֵהֶ֖ם וַֽיִּתְפְּשׂ֑וּם וַיֹּורִדֵ֤ם אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־נַ֣חַל קִישֹׁ֔ון וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖ם שָֽׁם׃
 ⁴¹ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ לְאַחְאָ֔ב עֲלֵ֖ה אֱכֹ֣ל וּשְׁתֵ֑ה כִּי־קֹ֖ול הֲמֹ֥ון הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃
 ⁴² וַיַּעֲלֶ֥ה אַחְאָ֖ב לֶאֱכֹ֣ל וְלִשְׁתֹּ֑ות וְאֵ֨לִיָּ֜הוּ עָלָ֨ה אֶל־רֹ֤אשׁ הַכַּרְמֶל֙ וַיִּגְהַ֣ר אַ֔רְצָה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם פָּנָ֖יו בֵּ֥ין
 ⁴³ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־נַעֲרֹ֗ו עֲלֵֽה־נָא֙ הַבֵּ֣ט דֶּֽרֶךְ־יָ֔ם וַיַּ֙עַל֙ וַיַּבֵּ֔ט וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵ֣ין מְא֑וּמָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שֻׁ֖ב שֶׁ֥בַע פְּעָמִֽים׃
 ⁴⁴ וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּשְּׁבִעִ֔ית וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה־עָ֛ב קְטַנָּ֥ה כְּכַף־אִ֖ישׁ עֹלָ֣ה מִיָּ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֲלֵ֨ה אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־אַחְאָב֙ אֱסֹ֣ר וָרֵ֔ד וְלֹ֥א יַעַצָרְכָ֖ה הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃
 ⁴⁵ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ עַד־כֹּ֣ה וְעַד־כֹּ֗ה וְהַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ הִֽתְקַדְּרוּ֙ עָבִ֣ים וְר֔וּחַ וַיְהִ֖י גֶּ֣שֶׁם גָּדֹ֑ול וַיִּרְכַּ֥ב אַחְאָ֖ב וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃
 ⁴⁶ וְיַד־יְהוָ֗ה הָֽיְתָה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ וַיְשַׁנֵּ֖ס מָתְנָ֑יו וַיָּ֙רָץ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אַחְאָ֔ב עַד־בֹּאֲכָ֖ה יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃

 ¹ 过了许久,到第三年,耶和华的话临到以利亚说:你去,使亚哈得见你;我要降雨在地上.
 ² 以利亚就去,要使亚哈得见他荒.那时,撒玛利亚有大饥;
 ³ 亚哈将他的家宰俄巴底召了来. <俄巴底甚是敬畏耶和华,
 ⁴ 耶洗别杀耶和华众先知的时候,俄巴底将一百个先知藏了,每五十人藏在一个洞里,拿饼和水供养他们.>
 ⁵ 亚哈对俄巴底说:我们走遍这地,到一切水泉旁和一切溪边,或者找得着青草,可以救活骡马,免得绝了牲畜.
 ⁶ 于是二人分地游行,亚哈独走一路,俄巴底独走一路.
 ⁷ 俄巴底在路上恰与以利亚相遇,俄巴底认出他来,就俯伏在地,说:你是我主以利亚不是?
 ⁸ 回答说:.是你去告诉你主人说,以利亚在这里.
 ⁹ 俄巴底说:仆人有甚么罪,你竟要将我交在亚哈手里,使他杀我呢?
 ¹⁰ 我指着永生耶和华─你的神起誓,无论哪一邦哪一国,我主都打发人去找你.若说你没有在那里,就必使那邦那国的人起誓说,实在是找着你不.
 ¹¹ 现在你说,要去告诉你主人说,以利亚在这里;
 ¹² 怕我一离开你,耶和华的灵就提你到我所不知道的地方去.恐这样,我去告诉亚哈,他若找不着你,就必杀我;仆人却是自幼敬畏耶和华的.
 ¹³ 耶洗别杀耶和华众先知的时候,我将耶和华的一百个先知藏了,每五十人藏在一个洞里,拿饼和水供养他们,岂没有人将这事告诉我主么?
 ¹⁴ 现在你说,要去告诉你主人说,以利亚在这里,他必杀我.
 ¹⁵ 以利亚说:我指着所事奉永生的万军之耶和华起誓,我今日必使亚哈得见我.
 ¹⁶ 于是俄巴底去迎着亚哈,告诉他;亚哈就去迎着以利亚.
 ¹⁷ 亚哈见了以利亚,便说:使以色列遭灾的就是你么?
 ¹⁸ 以利亚说:使以色列遭灾的不是我,乃是你和你父家;因为你们离弃耶和华的诫命,去随从巴力.
 ¹⁹ 现在你当差遣人,招聚以色列众人和事奉巴力的那四百五十个先知,并耶洗别所供养事奉亚舍拉的那四百个先知,使他们都上迦密山去见我.
 ²⁰ 亚哈就差遣人招聚以色列众人和先知都上迦密山.
 ²¹ 以利亚前来对众民说:们心持两意要到几时呢?你若耶和华是神,就当顺从耶和华;若巴力是神,就当顺从巴力.众民一言不答.
 ²² 以利亚对众民说:作耶和华先知的只剩下我一个人;巴力的先知却有四百五十个人.
 ²³ 当给我们两只牛犊,巴力的先知可以挑选一只,切成块子,放在柴上,不要点火;我也预备一只牛犊放在柴上,也不点火.
 ²⁴ 你们求告你们神的名,我也求告耶和华的名说.那降火显应的神,就是:神.众民回答这话甚好.
 ²⁵ 以利亚对巴力的先知说:你们既是人多,当先挑选一只牛犊,预备好了,就求告你们神的名,却不要点火.
 ²⁶ 他们将所得的牛犊预备好了,从早晨到午间,求告巴力的名说:力啊,求你应允我们!巴却没有声音,没有应允的.他们在所筑的坛四围踊跳.
 ²⁷ 到了正午,以利亚嬉笑他们,说:声求告罢!大因为他是神,他或默想,或走到一边,或行路,或睡觉,你们当叫醒他.
 ²⁸ 他们大声求告,按着他们的规矩,用刀枪自割,自刺,直到身体流血.
 ²⁹ 从午后直到献晚祭的时候,他们狂呼乱叫,却没有声音,没有应允的,也没有理会的.
 ³⁰ 以利亚对众民说:你们到我这里来的.众民就到他那坛里.他便重修已经毁坏耶和华.
 ³¹ 以利亚照雅各子孙支派的数目,取了十二块石头(耶和华的话曾临到雅各说:你的名要叫以色列),
 ³² 用这些石头为耶和华的名筑一座坛,在坛的四围挖沟,可容谷种二细亚,
 ³³ 又在坛上摆好了柴,把牛犊切成块子放在柴上,对众人说:你们用四个桶盛满水,倒在燔祭和柴上;
 ³⁴ 又说:倒第二次:.他们就倒第二次;又说第三次.倒他们就倒第三次.
 ³⁵ 水流在坛的四围,沟里也满了水.
 ³⁶ 到了献晚祭的时候,先知以利亚近前来,说:亚伯拉罕,以撒,以色列的神,耶和华啊,求你今日使人知道你是以色列的神,也知道我是你的仆人,又是奉你的命行这一切事.
 ³⁷ 耶和华啊,求你应允我,应允我!使这民知道你─耶和华是神,又知道是你叫这民的心回转.
 ³⁸ 是于,耶和华降下火来,烧尽燔祭,木柴,石头,尘土,又烧干沟里的水.
 ³⁹ 众民看见了,就俯伏在地,说:耶和华是神神!耶和华是!
 ⁴⁰ 以利亚对他们说:拿住巴力的先知,不容一人逃脱了!众人就拿住他他们.以利亚带他们到基顺河边,在那里杀们.
 ⁴¹ 以利亚对亚哈说:你现在可以上去吃喝,因为有多雨的响声了.
 ⁴² 哈就上去吃喝.亚以利亚上了迦密山顶,屈身在地,将脸伏在两膝之中;
 ⁴³ 对仆人说:上去,向海观看.你仆人就上去观看,说:有甚么.没他说:你再去观看次.如此七.
 ⁴⁴ 第七次仆人说:我看见有一小片云从海里上来,不过如人手那样大:.以利亚说你上去告诉亚哈,当套车下去,免得被雨阻挡.
 ⁴⁵ 霎时间,天因风云黑暗,降下大雨.亚哈就坐车往耶斯列去了.
 ⁴⁶ 耶和华的灵(原文是手)降在以利亚身上,他就束上腰,奔在亚哈前头,直到耶斯列的城门.
